Cervical Spine

Portion of the vertebral column and spinal cord located in the neck.

The cervical spinal levels of most interest to the neurosurgical patient are:

C1-2   -   C5-6   -   C6-7

 

C1-2

C1 is also called the "atlas", C2 is the "axis".

The odontoid process is an upward extension of C2.

Nerve root: C6

Degenerative changes usually seen first and worst at this level.

Muscles innervated: Triceps

Plexus branches: Radial
