Fontanel

The fontanels are spaces between cranial bones that have not quite fused.

As the plates of the skull grow the space between them (i.e. fontanels) decrease in size.  Normally by age 6 months there is a dense fibrous union across the fontanel that becomes fully mature hard bone sometime around two years.
