Spinal cord tumors

Spinal cord tumors

Surgery for spinal cord tumors:

The diameter of the spinal cord and medulla is less than 2 centimeters. A stroke or tumor of only a few millimeters will usually affect several neurologic functions because of the high density of important nervous system communication tracts that pass through the lower brainstem and upper spinal cord. No matter how delicately and precisely performed, surgery is traumatic. Dissecting around a tumor in the brainstem risks injury to major centers that control consciousness, movement, respiration, heart rate, and more.
